Fee
Protection - when the taxman wants a word
HM Revenue &
Customs (HMRC) has widely publicised its declared intention to 'claw
back' tax revenue due to them but lost to avoidance and evasion.
The process of
this 'claw back' by HMRC includes investigations which can be triggered
when they pick up something they see as an anomaly on a tax return.
Or they may act in response to a tip off, or something they spot in
a local newspaper, or even an overheard conversation in the pub. They
dont have to have a reason at all.
Investigations
can last from anywhere between three to nine months, but can go on for
a year or more. This is not only distressing and disruptive, but also
can be expensive as the time your professional adviser needs to dedicate
to an investigation is chargeable. Streets has found that the most common
reaction from clients is one of 'we wont be investigated', but
sadly this is not always the case.
HMRC and Financial
Times statistics show that over the last 5 years, the money clawed
back from enquiries has increased by over 65%.
There is, however,
an easy way to protect you from spiralling stress levels and mounting
costs: join our Fee Protection Scheme Taxsure.
TaxSure will cover
the fees incurred during an investigation, enquiry or dispute with HMRC.
